I am an academic laywer - I work on the meaning and effect of Law in society. I am interested in the way that Law interacts with other norms in society to make authority claims to pre- and proscribe behaviour; and in the necessity of solidarity in achieving justice and welfare in society.

Legal Philosophy - Jurisprudence I am very interested in the ethical rationalism of Kant and Gewirth. I am then very interested in the way that rationalism translates or is transposed into practical action and governance. For this, I study the discourse ethics of Habermas, and the formal philosophy of Politeness and particularly the work of Shaftesbury (1711). I am also very interested in the solidarity that has to underpin liberalism - especially thinking about the case of anarchism.

Practical Law My current focus is on the governance of health and life science research and practice - on privacy, data protection, research ethics committees, and on the concept of property. I am also interested in the Law of the welfare state, Equity, and in patient rights.

Outside my work in the Law, I am also a singer, both with choirs and on the solo stage.
